We started off the day by signing up to take the tour of Dachau. We were 2 hours early, so we decided to walk to the Marianplatz and check out the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady – Catholic). It was really neat. In additional to the magnificent architecture, stained glass windows, and large carving of a crucifix, the King of Bavaria is buried there. Ludwig I, who is largely responsible for building Munich and its layout today, is in the rear of the church in a humongous crypt. Interestingly, though, the plaque explaining who it is says the grave is empty. We figured he must be laid to rest at or near Nymphenberg Castle, but I’m not sure about that.
There is a large black footprint in the Narthex. The legend goes that after the church was built but before it was dedicated, the Devil showed up. The church did not have any windows, and the Devil laughed because what good was a church without windows? In his glee he jumped up and down and caused the black footprint to appear in the marble tile. What his jumping also caused is all the windows to form. When he realized that he did not have the last laugh and that God had won yet again, the Devil became so angry that he flew out of the church, and to this day there is always a breeze blowing around the twin domes of the cathedral.
